Deputy Public Prosecutors Aiman Adri Bin Hj Ahmad Zakaria and Ratno Eddy Sophian spoke to the residents on a number of pertinent issues associated with the use of social media such as the sharing of too much personal information online, the prevalence of criminal syndicates on social media as well as a number of cybercrime cases that have been prosecuted in Brunei Darussalam. Cyberbullying was also one of the disturbing trends addressed, whereby it was highlighted that the action affects real lives and that parents should remain their children refrain from behaviour such as pretending to be someone else online to hurt others or taking unflattering photographs of a person and spreading them on their mobile phones or the internet. The key message that was conveyed by the speakers was the need to exercise caution on social media and most importantly to “Think Before they Post”. The audience was also informed about the availability of laws in Brunei Darussalam that can be used to prosecute those who engage in cybercrime such as hacking and posting false and humiliating statements about others in online forums or social media.
