BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 20th February 2019 – The Honourable Solicitor General, Dayang Zuraini Binti Haji Sharbawi, received a courtesy call from the President of ASEAN Law Association (ALA), Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, at the Law Building yesterday.
During the courtesy call, the Honourable Solicitor General and Chief Justice exchanged views on various issues of common interest. Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon took the opportunity to touch base with ALA Brunei National Committee on his proposed plans during his three year term as the President of ALA. Some of these plans include improving connectivity between ALA and other ASEAN bodies, mainly the ASEAN Secretariat, as a strong legal resource. The Chief Justice shared his plans for promoting awareness on ALA's work and programmes amongst the ASEAN legal professionals and the youth including law students and graduates, including the establishment of a reliable and online portal for disseminating information on possible legal training and internships offered by international law firms and Chambers.
Chief Justice Menon also informed of an upcoming ALA event including the launch of the ASEAN Law Institute in Manila, Philippines in April this year.
The Honourable Solicitor General welcomed Chief Justice Menon's proposals, and expressed interest in using ALA as a platform to curate quality legal training for local legal professionals. She also provided a brief background on current developments in Brunei's legal profession. The Courtesy Visit serves as an affirmed renewal of close cooperation through ALA Platform.
Also present during the courtesy call were senior officers of the Attorney General's Chambers.
