Briefing on Cybercrime Awareness for Teenagers Rimba II Secondary School

The Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers continues its efforts to raise public awareness, particularly among teenagers, on the risks and dangers of technology and social media in a briefing to an audience of 100 Year 7 students at the Student Learning Centre, Rimba II Secondary School. The briefing was organised by the Student Faculty, Academy of Brunei Studies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, in cooperation with Rimba II Secondary School.

A presentation entitled ‘Cybercrime and the Risks and Dangers of Social Media’ was delivered as part of the briefing by Deputy Public Prosecutors, Siti Nurjauinah Hj Kula, Nurul Fitri Kiprawi, Nor’adliatul Hidayah Hj Mohd Zaidi and Pg Nor’ Azmeena Pg Hj Mohiddin. The speakers covered various issues associated with the use of social media such as cyber bullying and the prevalence of online scamming and blackmailing. One of the highlighted topics was the sharing of personal information online, which could be easily exploited by cyber criminals in order to commit offences. The audience was reminded to be weary of who they communicated with on the internet and to exercise caution before posting or sharing personal information about themselves as well as others.

The audience was also briefed on several cybercrime cases that have been prosecuted in Brunei Darussalam including those which resulted from spreading false information about others and forwarding viral messages. The presentation was then followed by a question and answer session, which covered issues such as Brunei Darussalam’s relevant laws and the penalties for related offences. Students were advised not to believe everything they receive online and through social media, and to try and ascertain the accuracy and credibility of information through official sources before sharing.

The Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers invites interested agencies, schools and educational institutions to contact the Chambers if they are interested in holding similar briefings in the future.
